Dan Colwell, a 2004 graduate of the University of Massachusetts at Amherst, enters his 11th year as a member of the men’s soccer staff. In 2008, 2010 and 2011, he was recognized for being part of the America East’s Coaching Staff of the Year. This past year, he helped the Terriers return to the NCAAs for the first time since 2008 and claim their first at-large berth since 2007 behind a 12-6-2 overall record and RPI ranking of 31.
Immediately following graduation in 2004, Colwell was appointed head coach of FC United club team, a member of the Massachusetts Premier League (MAPLE). He spent three years coaching FC United finishing his tenure with the club capturing the 2007 State Championship. He has now been named a coach for FC Greater Boston Bolts.
Prior to joining the BU men’s soccer staff, Colwell spent the 2005 season at Division III Emmanuel College as an assistant coach for the men’s squad, helping guide the Saints to their best finish in program history (7-7-1 overall, 5-3-1 GNAC).
Colwell played four years of soccer at UMass, winning the Atlantic 10 Conference in three of his four years – 2000, 2001, and 2002. Currently he ranks tied for ninth on the UMass all-time career assists list with 16. In his senior season he was named to the All-Atlantic 10 second team, after a campaign in which he started all 19 games and recorded five goals and five assists.
In that year, he ranked third on the team in scoring and led the squad with his five assists. In four seasons, Colwell amassed nine goals and 16 assists for 34 points.
He currently resides in Boston, Mass. and, in addition to his responsibilities with the men’s soccer program, he is also a nationally certified personal trainer specializing in speed, agility and sport-specific training.
